Boohoo enrol additional staff onto Apprenticeships after TRS Training support 89 staff to complete programme

TRS Training Ltd has launched a new apprenticeship programme with UK online fashion company, Boohoo. This comes after the culmination of a previous successful programme with the expanding retailer, which recently saw eighty nine staff members complete apprenticeships in Warehousing and Storage.

Apprenticeship Levy
The working partnership between TRS and Boohoo began when the Government introduced the Apprenticeship Levy. This requires employers with a wage bill of over £3m wage to pay 0.5% of it into an account which they must use for Apprenticeships training.

Boohoo were keen to introduce Apprenticeships into the organisation as a tool for developing and investing in staff. They were already familiar with the high standard of training and support offered by TRS who had been delivering Level 1 qualifications to staff for some time.

Off The Job Training

Boohoo’s only concern for the upcoming year was the new apprenticeship requirement to ensure apprentices spend 20% of their time in “off-the-job” training. TRS Training worked with Boohoo to develop training and assessment programmes that ensured that apprentices fulfilled the minimum training requirement in ways to suit the employer’s working practices and patterns. As this is a new requirement it will be reviewed once implemented to make sure that it is effective for both the learner and the business.

Onsite Trainer

Barry, a TRS trainer/assessors, was based on-site at Boohoo full time throughout the duration of the apprenticeship. This meant he was always on hand to support apprentices, schedule training sessions in consultation with managers, and assess apprentices performing tasks on the job.

Tania Morgan, Learning and Development Manager at Boohoo is very pleased with results:

“Having a TRS trainer onsite full time really helped everything run smoothly. Barry quickly picked up on our working practices and shift patterns and shaped a programme of training and support to fit in with that – this took the stress off of our shoulders. The apprentices moved round departments, training across different functions – picking, stock, returns and quality control. This meant that at our busiest times, they had the experience and skills required to step up as team leaders.”

TRS trainer/assessor Barry, highlights the commitment by Boohoo to investing in its staff:

“Boohoo management played an extremely proactive role in the development of their apprentices and were quick to recognize and reward effort. This was invaluable to the motivation and progress of the apprentices and their overall final achievement rates.”

Staff Promotion

The apprentices who completed their training are now full time, productive members of staff. Those who had previously been employed via agencies are now full time permanent staff. Some have been promoted from operatives to team leaders and warehouse trainers.

They are all enthusiastic about their participation in the apprenticeship programme at Boohoo, and report 95% satisfaction levels with training services from TRS Training. Dimitrios Gerogiannis, a Boohoo staff member who recently completed his apprenticeship, sums up the benefits of his course:

“The apprenticeship helped me become better at my job. I also feel safer at work as the training I did gave me a full understanding of Boohoo’s health and safety procedures. It also provided me with a clear understanding of my company’s values. My assessor from TRS was very supportive throughout the whole process and I was instructed well.”

Following the success of the 89 apprentices, a new programme of ongoing recruitment of Boohoo staff onto the new Supply Chain Warehouse Operative apprenticeship has started, supported by TRS Training. The apprentices’ training programme has been designed to ensure they become multi-skilled across all areas of warehouse operations.  They will undertake a rotational plan across departments, receiving direct skills and knowledge training in each area. This will enable them to perform at an escalating rate of productivity until they are fully competent.

Tailored to working routines

TRS Training appreciates that businesses can feel intimidated by the amount of time and planning they believe is needed to introduce apprenticeships into an organisation. There can also be confusion about where to start. That is where TRS Training can help, stepping in to provide advice and help implement an apprenticeship programme that increases productivity and staff loyalty, is tailored to suit employers’ working routines, and causes minimum disruption. Basing our staff onsite means we’re always on hand to ensure apprentices progress on time and on target.
