Skills Bootcamps in HGV Driving: Applicant Queries

We offer the following Skills Bootcamps:

  • New HGV Driver: Get Your Cat C licence
  • New HGV Driver: Get Your Cat C+E licence
  • Upgrade your HGV Licence from Cat C to Cat C+E

The Skills Bootcamps in HGV Driving aim to get you a job in the logistics industry working as an HGV driver.

Cat C licence
A Cat C licence will let you drive a Cat C vehicle, the most common HGV vehicle.  These vehicles are often used to do local deliveries rather than larger vehicles.  A category C licence means you can drive vehicles over 3.5 tonnes but not over 32 tonnes. Category C (Class 2) licences typically cover a vehicle with a cab and trailer fixed permanently together. In other words, what we would consider a ‘standard lorry’ or a rigid vehicle.

Cat C+E licence
A category C + E license is your most comprehensive HGV licence. With this, you can drive a drawbar or articulated vehicle (artic). The E part of the category C+E licence stands for entitlement and means you can go up to or over 750kg in weight. This licence, also known as Class 1, allows you to drive any large goods-style vehicle, including a double trailer.

You must be 19 or over, live and have the right to work in England, and have a full car driving licence.

There is no cost to you, regardless of whether you are employed, unemployed or self-employed. We cover the cost of getting your provisional licence and your medical.

Yes, as long as you completed the New to HGV Driving (Cat C) Skills Bootcamp fully and a C+E Skills Bootcamp is available after you finish.

No, you can’t do a Skills Bootcamp if you are currently on another Government-funded course eg apprenticeship.

You have to complete eight online modules before you do your practical driving practice. Our tutors teach these online sessions in the morning and the evening. We repeat them on several occasions so you can choose which sessions suit you best to attend. We will also support you in revising for and sitting your theory test.

Once you finish all eight online sessions and have passed your theory, you will go onto 5 or 10 days of practical driving skills training, depending on which bootcamp you are doing. Then we book your test.

Not at all. We have a team of trained mentors who are used to helping students use online technology for the first time. Many people are anxious about technology, so don’t let this put you off. Also, if you are generally worried about returning to training, we have trained people to help you overcome this quickly too.

  • Session 1 MOD 1a and 1b Theory Test Preparation
  • Session 2 Driver’s Hours and Digital Tachographs
  • Session 3 Health and Safety + MOD 2 case studies (for Skills Bootcamp 1 and 2)
  • Session 4 Vulnerable Road Users
  • Session 5 Daily Walkaround Vehicle Checks
  • Session 6 Vehicle Loading
  • Session 7 Driver Health & Well-being
  • Session 8 Safe and Fuel-Efficient Driving

We run each of these sessions on multiple occasions, so you are sure to find a date and time to suit you.

After each session, we also offer optional online practice sessions for theory test preparation.

Please complete our online application in the first instance. We will contact you to arrange an introductory phone session when we receive your application.

During the phone session, we will check your current driving licence. We will also ask you about your career plans and if you have any support needs. For example, if you are not used to using IT, we can help you set your computer up for the online classroom sessions. We will enrol you on the course and give you a start date.
