This practical training course is designed for drivers who
already hold a category C licence and want to progress and
gain a category CE (class 1) HGV licence.
Delivered by experienced HGV instructors, the course provides
the practical skills, knowledge and confidence needed to pass
the DVSA category CE practical driving test and drive
articulated vehicles up to 44 tonnes safely and professionally.
£1700 (including VAT & DVSA test fees)

This course is for those who want a category CE (Class 1) HGV licence to further develop their driving career.

During your training, you’ll develop the practical skills required to become a safe and competent category CE driver. You will learn how to:

  • Carry out daily walkaround checks for the vehicle and trailer
  • Safe coupling and uncoupling of articulated lorries (air lines, electrics, fifth wheel)
  • Drive confidently in urban, rural, and motorway conditions
  • Navigate junctions, roundabouts, and complex road layouts
  • Reversing and manoeuvring with a trailer attached
  • Manage vehicle articulation, swing, and off tracking
  • Learn safe driving techniques for real-world road conditions
  • Increase your employment opportunities within the transport and logistics sector

Training is delivered at one of our driver training schools by highly qualified HGV instructors.

Depending on availability, learning is provided in either of the following ways:

  • One-to-one basis
  • Shared basis: two learners and one instructor

This approach ensures learners receive extensive practical driving experience while benefiting from expert instruction throughout the course.

Your instructor will prepare you for the official DVSA practical driving assessment, which includes:

  • Vehicle safety questions
  • Module 3A reversing exercise
  • Module 3B on-road practical driving test with a DVSA Examiner

Your practical tests will only be booked when your instructor is confident you are ready.

On successful completion, you will achieve your category CE (class 1) HGV licence, allowing you to drive articulated HGV vehicles up to 44 tonnes professionally.

Once you have obtained your HGV provisional licence and passed your theory tests, enrolling is simple:

  1. Our driving school training manager, Jayne, will contact you to arrange your practical training dates at your preferred training centre.
  2. Your payment option will be agreed and a payment form sent to you.
  3. Once payment has been received, you’ll receive your joining instructions, including your training location, arrival time and everything you’ll need to bring.
  4. Attend your training on the agreed start date and begin working towards your category CE licence.

To enrol on this course, you must:

  • Hold a full category C (class 2 HGV) licence
  • Hold an HGV provisional licence that has a C+E provisional entitlement
