Course overview

This practical training course is designed for drivers who have already passed their Module 2 LGV case study test and want to prepare for and pass the final practical demonstration test.

Delivered by experienced HGV instructors, the course provides the practical skills, knowledge and confidence needed to pass the DVSA module 4 test and manage vehicle security, emergencies, and load distribution safely and professionally.

During your training, you’ll develop the practical safety and demonstration skills required to pass your practical Driver CPC examination. You will learn how to:

  • Spot mechanical defects by performing a full daily walkaround check
  • Secure heavy cargo safely using various ropes, straps, and chains
  • Calculate precise weight limits to prevent vehicle overloading and instability
  • Protect your vehicle against criminal activity and illegal immigration attempts
  • React quickly to unexpected emergencies like vehicle fires and road accidents
  • Protect your body from physical injury when loading or unloading goods
  • Demonstrate these skills confidently to meet the exact DVSA test standard

Training is delivered at one of our driver training schools by highly qualified HGV instructors.

This approach ensures learners receive extensive practical driving experience while benefiting from expert instruction throughout the course.

The Module 4 practical test usually takes around 30 minutes to complete and is assessed by a DVSA-accredited assessor, either in-house by a TRS Instructor or by one of our training partners.

It includes 5 short question areas alongside a practical demonstration.

The main topics covered are:

  • Ability to carry out a daily walk-around vehicle safety check
  • Safe loading of the vehicle and securing of loads
  • Preventing physical risk to yourself and others
  • Vehicle and cargo security procedures
  • Dealing with emergency situations
  • Understanding vehicle and load safety (including stability and safe operation)
  • Preventing criminal activity and illegal use of the vehicle

On successful completion of all Driver CPC modules (Modules 2 & 4), you will be awarded a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence card, allowing you to drive professionally for hire or reward.

Passing your module 4 practical test is the final step in achieving your Initial Driver CPC and obtaining your Driver Qualification Card (DQC), allowing you to drive professionally.

From here, many learners progress into their HGV career and further training, opening up a range of opportunities, including:

  • Upgrade to Class 1 (C+E) for higher-paid driving work
  • Gain an ADR qualification for transporting hazardous goods
  • Move into specialist driving such as tanker, fridge, container, or multi-drop work

Once you have obtained your HGV provisional licence and passed your Module 2 test, enrolling is simple:

  1. Our driving school training manager, Jayne, will contact you to arrange your practical training dates at your preferred training centre.
  2. Your payment option will be agreed and a payment form sent to you.
  3. Once payment has been received, you’ll receive your joining instructions, including your training location, arrival time and everything you’ll need to bring.
  4. Attend your training on the agreed start date and begin your Module 4 training

To enrol on this course, you must:

  • Hold a valid UK driving licence with provisional entitlement for the relevant vehicle category (category C or CE)
  • Have already passed the Driver CPC module 2 (case studies test)
  • Be at the minimum legal age for the vehicle category you are training for

You must complete modules 2 before you can book or take the Module 4 practical demonstration test.
