Recent Changes to Maths and English in Apprenticeships – What It Means for the Logistics Sector

Employers in the logistics industry know how vital apprenticeships are to building a skilled and capable workforce. Recent changes to Functional Skills requirements in maths and English for apprentices aged 19 and over aim to make this pathway more accessible to both employers and apprentices.

What’s Changed?

Until now, apprentices were required to complete and pass Functional Skills qualifications in maths and English as part of their programme. However, the UK government has introduced a new reform, removing these mandatory requirements for apprentices aged 19 and over.

From now on, learners in this age group can complete their apprenticeship without needing to pass maths and English assessments. But this doesn’t mean these skills are no longer available—if you, as their employer, feel Functional Skills training would benefit both the individual and your organisation, it can remain part of their development plan.

For apprentices aged 16 to 18, these qualifications will still be compulsory to ensure younger learners build a strong foundation as they enter the workforce.

What Does This Mean for the Logistics Industry?

Many employers and employees have previously been discouraged by this barrier, which could slow down or complicate completing an apprenticeship. With this hurdle removed, the door is now wider open for more employees to upskill and contribute to your business.

However, while this reform simplifies the process, it’s important not to overlook the value of Functional Skills training. Strong maths and English abilities are often assets in logistics roles, from scheduling deliveries to managing data. At TRS, we’ll help employers to assess whether Functional Skills training could be of benefit to apprentices within their workforce.
