TRS helps Gerard launch HGV driving career

  • Post category:HGV licence

The UK is short of HGV drivers. The Road Haulage Association (RHA) estimate that the nation needs over 200,000 new drivers over the next five years to meet demand. Despite this urgent need, many logistics companies are finding it difficult to recruit qualified drivers.

To help address this issue, Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) provided funding to help unemployed residents access careers in logistics. Through this support, TRS delivered the Driver of Vehicle Goods (DVG) course. The course is designed to help individuals gain their HGV licence to find work in the logistics industry.

For Gerard, an unemployed resident of Manchester, this opportunity marked a turning point. Encouraged by his support worker, he saw the course as a chance to achieve his goal of becoming an HGV driver. With GMCA covering the cost of training, Gerard said:

“It was a no-brainer. I signed up as soon as I could.”

First time pass

Gerard enrolled on the 17-day course, which was spread over several weeks, in May this year. On the course, Gerard got hands-on experience in driving and operating an HGV vehicle. Additionally, he developed an understanding of professional practices in logistics through several online tutorials.

Speaking about his TRS tutor for the online sessions, Paul Rowden, Gerard described him as “helpful” and “accommodating”. He appreciated Paul’s flexibility in delivering sessions around his schedule to give him the best chance of passing his theory tests.

For his practical driver training, Gerard was taught by TRS driver trainer, Paul Clarke. Gerard found Paul to be patient and valued the constructive feedback he provided.

Gerard passed his test and now has his CAT C licence and CPC qualification, enabling him to drive rigid vehicles over 7.5 tonnes and up to 32 tonnes. This was an amazing achievement, and Gerard is now excited to begin his new journey in the logistics industry.

“A big thank you to Jayne, Jackie, Chloe, Carl, Paul R and Paul C for all your help in getting me through my class C test. Looking forward to getting back with you to do my CE when I can. Can’t recommend these guys enough.”

What’s next for Gerard?

Gerard has already secured a part time job driving a 7.5 tonne vehicle, and wants to develop his driving career further.

Gerard plans to return to TRS to complete his training and obtain his cat C+E licence. He is committed to volunteering and humanitarian work. So he aims to apply his new driving skills to support humanitarian aid efforts in war-torn regions. Furthermore, he wants to broaden his understanding of global challenges, and assist those in need.

“I’m looking into doing some aid relief and volunteering, bringing food over to war-torn countries to experience the world in a different way but also to help people that really need it.”
