B&M sign up with TRS to train LGV drivers

We are pleased to announce that TRS Training has won the contract to deliver HGV/LGV apprenticeships for B&M. A total of 25 existing staff members will enrol onto TRS’s apprenticeship programme at sites in Bedford, Runcorn, Liverpool and Middlewich.

The B&M Group is a fast-growing variety goods value retailer with stores operating in the UK and France. In the UK, they have over 600 B&M merchandise and grocery stores and own the Heron Foods convenience stores, of which there are over 275. They also own over 90 stores in France.

Professional LGV driving licence

The LGV Apprenticeship aims to provide individuals with the skills to carry out safe and efficient deliveries using large or heavy good vehicles. Apprentices undertake practical training alongside learning in a virtual classroom and shadowing other members of staff. The whole apprenticeship is flexible to fit around existing working patterns, which means that B&M won’t find themselves short-staffed at busy times.

The B&M apprentices will get plenty of on-the-job skills practice, and of course, they will be doing LGV driving lessons, which will furnish them with their lorry driving licence. Specialist tutors from TRS will deliver the training whilst all apprentices can access individual support to overcome difficulties or challenges. A workplace mentor, a long-term member of B&M staff, will provide the apprentices with support and guidance within the company. In this way, the apprentices learn what behaviour and standards are expected of them as B&M drivers.

Kevin Birch, Director with TRS, says:

“We are very pleased to be able to help B&M develop existing staff into professional LGV  drivers. We all know there is a shortage of qualified drivers, and like many other firms, B&M has recognised that the apprenticeship route is an ideal way of developing current staff as drivers. Not only will the apprentices gain their licence and industry-standard skills, but all the training is funded through the Apprenticeship Levy or Government funding.”

Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours for LGV Driving

All apprenticeships consist of three fundamental components: the acquisition of knowledge, skills and behaviours. The LGV Driving Apprenticeship will equip B&M staff with the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to make safe and efficient deliveries using large goods vehicles.

The knowledge aspect of this apprenticeship includes essential topics like how to secure loads and the use of IT in the industry. The skills component will see apprentices learning practical proficiency in safe driving, protecting the vehicle from damage, route planning and other areas. Finally, the apprentices will develop behaviours appropriate to their job role and aligned with B&M corporate standards. These include professionalism, good timekeeping, and customer focus.
